Juneau is a city in the Alaska Panhandle. It has served as the capital of Alaska since 1900, when the government of the then-District of Alaska relocated there from Sitka. Today it is administered as a merged city and surrounding municipality with a total area of 3,255 sq mi (8,430 sq km) and a population of 31,000.
The Juneau area was the traditional fishing grounds of the Tlingit Indians. Among the tribes here include the Auke and Taku. The settlement from which Juneau was formed was established by gold prospectors in 1880. The following year the miners renamed it after Joe Juneau, a faniys miner and prospector from Canada.
Juneau experiences a humid continental climate. The warmest month is July, when average temperature rises to between 49°F and 64°F.
