Go BackIowa City is a city in Johnson County, on the eastern part of Iowa. It covers 24.4 sq mi (63.3 sq km) and has a population of 68,000 (2011 estimate). The city is located on the Iowa River. It was founded in 1839, before Iowa Territory attained statehood. It served as the second capital of Iowa Territory from 1841, and as the first capital of Iowa State from 1846 to 1857, when the capital relocated to Des Moines.

The warmest month in Iowa City is July, which gets an average high temperature of 87°F (30°C). January is the coldest month, when the average low temperature drops to 15°F (-9°C). June is the wettest month, receiving 4.7 in (11 cm) of precipitation.
Iowa City was hit by a tornado on 13 April, 2006. It was the first time ever that the city bore a direct hit of a tornado. Although there were no serious injuries, the city suffered heavy damage. Among the destroyed properties include a Dairy Queen that has been in business for 54 years. It however managed to resume business in late September the same year. The 134-year-old Saint Patrick's Catholic Church also suffered severe damage. it happened just a few minutes after Holy Thursday Mass.

Two years later, Iowa City was seriously affected by the Great Iowa Flood of 2008. Also severely affected was the University of Iowa. When it was revealed that the flooding was exacerbated by the damming of the Iowa River for construction by the University of Iowa, some of the displaced residents even considered suing the university and the Army Corps of Engineers.
Visiting Iowa City
Interstate 80 passed through Iowa City from east to west, connecting it with Davenport in the east, and Des Moines in the west. I-380 connects it to Waterloo in the north.
