Hermann had an established tradition of viticulture established by immigrants from the Rhineland region of Germany. However during the Prohibition period, these vineyards were shut down and was not revived until the 1960s.

The city of Hermann was established in the 1830s by the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia (Deutsche Ansiedlungs-Gesellschaft zu Pennsylvania) with idealistic utopian goals that supported the traditional German culture. It was named in honor of Hermann der Cherusker, a Germanic leader who defeated the Romans in AD 9. (This provided the city an excuse to celebrate the 2000th anniversary of Hermann's victory in 2009).
