Henderson is the second biggest city in Nevada after Las Vegas. Located in the southeastern corner of the state, Henderson is in fact within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area. The city covering 79.7 sq mi (244.7 sq km) is within Clark County. It has a population of around 260,000 (2011 estimate).

Henderson sprawls on the southeastern edge of the Las Vegas Valley, at a height of approximately 1,330 ft (410 m). The city is quite young, having been founded as late as the 1940's, when it was developed for the extraction of magnesium ore. Henderson was regarded as a city "born in America's defence", as its economy is based on producing the magnesium ore that was used to create incendiary munition casings, aircraft engines, and other parts.

Henderson can be considered a "casualty of peace". The end of the Second World War had a tremendous detrimental impact on its economy. During the decade following the war, the town saw its population shrinking as people moved away to find employment elsewhere.

With help from the Nevada Legislature, Henderson was given a new lease on life. Soon the momentum generated helped it to be incorporated as a city on 16 April, 1953. From then on, Henderson began to grow on its own, adding public facilities, recreational sights and tourist products that attracted visitors as well as residents. This being Nevada, Henderson has a number of casinos as well including the ones at Fiesta Hotel and Sunset Station Hotel.
