Essex is the biggest town in Vermont. By American standard, Essex is small, with a population of just around 20,000. This town in Chittenden County is however the second-largest municipality in Vermont after the municipality of Burlington.
Essex is located in the northwestern part of Vermont, to the east of Burlington, not far from Lake Champlain and the border with New York State. Within the town of Essex is the village of Essex Junction from which the town developed.

Essex Junction was established in 1892 so as to provide utility services to the country folks. Over time, a town developed outside the village. By 1958, there were attempts to merge Essex Junction with Essex. Even as recently as 2007, the decision whether or not to merge the two entities is not conclusive. At present they remain as the Town of Essex and the Village of Essex Junction.
There is not much reason to head to Essex or Essex Junction unless you happen to have a relative staying there. The town is howeaver close to many skiing resorts.

Visiting Essex, Vermont
Interstate 89 is the only interstate highway connecting Essex with the rest of the country. It is actually heading towards Burlington, and can be reached by taking Essex Rd (Route 2A). You can reach Essex by exiting the I-89 at Exit 12.
