The history of Edmond goes back to 1887, when the site was chosen to be a railway station for the Santa Fe Railroad, which was being built into Indian Territory. The station was named after Edmond Burdick, the traveling freight agent. The Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 brought a rush of settlers and the town sprang up overnight. The first church to open was the St John the Baptist Catholic Church, immediately after the land run.
The growth of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area reached Edmond in the mid 20th century, turning Edmond into a suburb. The city is the headquarters of the Homeland supermarket chain.
