Charlottesville is an independent city in Virginia. It covers 10.3 sq mi (26.6 sq km) and has a population of 43,500 people (2011 estimate). it is surrounded by Albemarle County but is not part of it. It is located along the Rivanna River in central Virginia.

Charlottesville experiences a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. July is the hottest month, with average high temperature of 88°F (31.1°C) while January is the coldest, when average low temperature drops to 26.2°F (-3.2°C). Rainfall is quite evenly spreadly with July being marginally the wettest month, receiving 4.94 in (125.5 mm) of rain.

Charlottesville was founded in 1762 and named after Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III. It is one of the few cities in Virginia that escaped widespread destruction during the American Civil War. The city is home to three American presidents namely Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe.
