Bellevue is located between Lake Washington to the west and Lake Sammamish to the east. Kelsey Creek is the main river flowing through the city. Bellevue was founded in 1869 by William Meydenbauer. Its name means "beautiful view" in French. It remained very much a rural village until 1940, when the completion of the Lake Washington Floating Bridge spurred development. This led to the construction of a second bridge across Lake Washington, the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge in 1963.
Bellevue is today an exciting, fast-developing town. It has one of the largest shopping centers in the state, called Bellevue Square. The area continues to grow as the largest shopping and dining destination on Seattle Eastside.
