Beckley is the county seat of Raleigh County, in southern West Virginia. It covers 9.2 sq mi (23.8 sq km) and has a population of 18,000 people (2012 estimate). It is 2,421 ft (738 m) above sea level.

Beckley experiences a humid continental climate. August is the warmest month here, when the average high temperature rises to 96°F. January is the coldest month, with average low temperature of 22.1°F. July receives the most rain, at 4.78 in.

Originally called Beckleyville, Beckley was founded in the early 19th century by Alfred Beckley and named in honor of his father John James Beckley.
