Ocotal is a city in northwestern Nicaragua. It covers 85 sq km (32.9 sq mi) and has a population of 32,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is the provincial capital of Nueva Segovia Department.
The city of Ocotal is a regional center for light industries and crafts. It is also within a coffee-producing region. Due to its proximity to Honduras, it became the location of a Honduran government-in-exile following a coup on Honduran president Manuel Zelaya in 2009.
