Martinique is a small island territory in the eastern Caribbean. The island, which covers 1,128 sq km (435.5 sq mi), is an overseas region of France. Martinique is between Dominica to the north and St Lucia to the south. It has a population of about 400,000 (2011 estimate). Its capital and main city is Fort-de-France.

Martinique is four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-4). As it is regarded as being part of France, it follows all French laws, is part of the European Union, and uses Euro as the official currency. The island had a 2008 estimated nominal GDP of €7.9 billion and a per capita GDP of €19,607.

The island of Martinique was inhabited by the Arawak Indians. Christopher Columbus arrived here in 1502. It was first claimed by France in 1635, and despite several attempts by the British to take the island, it has remained a French territory until today. The island became an overseas department of France in 1946.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
