Santa Rosa de Copán is one of the main cities in western Honduras. It is the provincial capital of Copán Department. Among tourists, Santa Rosa de Copán is noted for being the gateway to the Maya ruins of Copán (Copán Ruinas). The city itself has a historic center that is well preserved and worth exploring.
Santa Rosa de Copán has a population of 43,000 people (2011 estimate). It is 1,150 meters (3,773 ft) above sea level, giving it a much cooler climate that cities in the lowland. The climate at Santa Rosa de Copán is described as subtropical. Temperature may rise to 29°C (84°F) in JUne while it may drop as low as 13°C (55°F) from December to February.
Santa Rosa de Copán was founded in 1705 by Captain Don Juan García de la Candelaria, who bought the land from the Spanish Crown. The settlement was originall called Los Llanos and later Santa Rosa de Los Llanos. It was renamed once again in 1865, to Santa Rosa de Copán, a name that it hold till today.

The International Highway of the West passes through Santa Rosa de Copán. You can take a bus to Santa Rosa de Copán from all the major cities in Honduras. You can also get there from El Poy in El Salvador and from Agua Calientes in Guatemala.
