Ibarra is a city in northern Ecuador whose full name is San Miguel de Ibarra. It is the provincial capital of Ibarra Province. The city is located at the base of the Imbabura Volcano, on the bank of the Tahuando River. It covers 41.68 sq km (16.1 sq mi) and has a population of 109,000 people (2011 estimate).

Ibarra is located 2,225 m (7,300 ft) above sea level, and experiences a subtropical highland climate. Temperature is quite constant throughout the year. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1606. Before that it was an Inca settlement, which is located about 2 km from the site of the present city.

Ibarra today has an attractive historic center with many whitewashed colonial-style houses. With its cobblestone streets, it has become a popular tourist destination.
