Liberia is the largest city and provincial capital of Guanacaste province, Costa Rica. It is 215 km (134 mi) to the northwest of San José. The city is today the main urban center for northwest Costa Rica. It has a population of 35,000 people (2011 estimate).
Being the main town on the Pacific coast of the country, Liberia acts as gateway for visiting the Pacific beaches such as Playa Hermosa, Playa del Coco and Playa Tamarindo. This position also helps Liberia develop as a tourist destination, with a number of attractions of its own.
