Great Stirrup Cay is a small island within the Berry Islands group, in the Bahamas. It is a private island which since 1977 belongs to Norwegian Cruise Line. The company makes it an exclusive playground for its cruise passengers.
While the Lucayan Indians inhabited the Bahamas, it is not known whether they also inhabited Great Stirrup Cay. The Spanish arrived here in the 17th century. Later the waters were infested with pirates seeking hideouts for their stolen and smuggled goods. The pirate menace was only eradicated over time when the British established a presence here.

In the early 19th century, Loyalist settlers arrived, bringing with them slaves to work their plantation on Great Stirrup Cay. This continued until around 1840, when slavery was abolished in the British Empire, forcing plantations in Great Stirrup that depended on slave labor to be abandoned.
