Lusaka is the capital and biggest city in Zambia. Situated 1,300 m (4,265 ft) above sea level, it covers an area of 360 sq km (140 sq mi) and has a population of 1.75 million people. It is one of the fastest growing cities in southern Africa.
Lusaka traces its history to a village at Manda Hill, and was named after the village headman, Lusakaa. The site was chosen by the British in 1905 for the construction of a railway station, and the town developed around it. As it is the crossroad for various road and railway lines, it soon eclipsed the then capital, Livingstone. In 1935, it replaced Livingstone as the capital of then Northern Rhodesia.
Lusaka became the capital of the newly independent Zambia in 1964. Since then it has developed into a vibrant, cosmopolitan city.
