Conakry is the capital and largest city of Guinea. It occupies the Kaloum Peninsla that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The city has close to two million inhabitants (2012 estimate), representing about a quarter of the population of Guinea.
Conakry originally occupied the tiny Tombo Island. Since then it has grown to occupy the neighboring Kaloum Peninsula, with the urban area stretching for 36 kilometers (22 mi) but is only between 0.2 to 6 km (660 ft to 20,000 ft) wide. It was established after the British ceded Tombo Island to the French in 1887.
Conakry was made the capital of French Guinea in 1904, and after independence, the capital of present-day Guinea. Conakry also has its share of political violence, the most recent was in 2009, when the military junta opened fire on protesters in the city, killing 157 people.
