Yaoundé is the capital and second largest city in Cameroon. Located near the center of the country, at an elevation of 750 m (2,500 ft) above sea level, Yaoundé has a population of 1.5 million people (2012 estimate).
Yaoundé was founded by the German in 1888 when Cameroon was a German colony. During the First World War, it was occupied by Belgian troops, after which, it became part of French Cameroon. Yaoundé was selected to be the capital of French Cameroon. After the country became independent, it continues to serve as the capital of the independent Republic of Cameroon.
Visiting Yaoundé
The Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport (NSI) is the airport serving Yaoundé. It receives flights from Abidjan, Brazzaville, Brussels, Casablanca, Cotonou, Douala, Garoua, Lomé Lyon, Malabo, Maroua, Nairobi and Paris, among others.
