Ko Mai Phai เกาะไม้ไผ่

Ko Maiphai (Bamboo Island)Ko Maiphai (Bamboo Island) (4 November, 2005)

Ko Mai Phai เกาะไม้ไผ่ , also known as Bamboo Island, is a small island between the Krabi coast and Phi Phi. However, there are no bamboo growing here. The name Ko Mai Phai came about from mistaking the casuarinas growing all along the shore of the island for bamboos, hence the name, which is then translated into English as Bamboo Island.

To the west of Ko Mai Phai is another island, called Ko Yung เกาะยุง . The name translates as "mosquito island", but was wrongly spelled as Moskito Island. And that wrong translation stuck, just as with Bamboo Island.

Ko Mai Phai, or Bamboo Island, is surrounded by clear waters.

Bamboo Island is located northeast of Phi Phi Don. It has a stretch of lovely white sandy beach on the east side. The casuarina grove covers most of the flat land of Bamboo Island that is above the water line.

On the horizon to the west of Bamboo Island is the jagged Moskito Island, which has no proper beach, and hence no place to disembark.
