Rapid Penang is the main public bus operator in Penang. It is wholy owned by the Federal Government under the Ministry of Finance. The company commenced its bus services on 31 July, 2007. It is modelled after Rapid KL, which is its parent company, as a way to alleviate the public transportation plight in Penang state.
The introduction of Rapid Penang came about as a rescue from the government when the already ailing bus services in Penang was showing signs of coming to a complete standstill. The main bus operator on the island, Penang Yellow Bus, abruptly pulled out of services in providing public transportation on 1 January 2004. This created a lot of difficulties to those who depended on public transport. In an attempt to hammer together a rescue plan, the Penang state government revamped the existing bus network on 1 April 2006. However, the revamp failed to improve the bus services provided, necessitating the introduction of a whole new bus company.
