Ong Cheng Huat Seafood (王清发海鲜), Bagan Lalang, Penang

Ong Cheng Huat Seafood (王清发海鲜) (see map) is a seafood restaurant in Bagan Lalang, Butterworth. Unlike other seafood restaurants, Ong Cheng Huat is nowhere near the sea. Nonetheless that has not stopped a constant stream of customers converging on it during lunch time.

Ong Cheng Huat is located in a compound at the end of a winding village road, served only a limited number of dishes which are ordered by practically every table. Its signature dishes include the steamed red snapper, spicy ch'iek (saltwater crabs), stir-fried lala (mussels), heah piah (prawn fritters) and deep-fried puyu (spring chicken), along with fried bihun (rice noodles).
From my experience, the food seems to arrive at the table within five minutes after they are ordered. I particularly enjoy the steamed red snapper, which is garnished with a generous helping of mashed ginger, garlic and chili padi (bird-eye pepper). The spicy ch'iek is quite tasty too and the lala are succulent.

I find the deep-fried spring chicken to be nothing special. Nothing wrong with the serving, except that puyus in general have not much meat, and there's nothing special about eating them here, apart from that we're close to Sungai Puyu.
The heah piah is crunchy and satisfactory. As for the bihun, I would say it's not bad, but it's more a stomach filler - with so much other tasty food, I have no space in my tummy for it. Nevertheless the red snapper, ch'iek and lala are good enough reason for me to make a trip from Penang Island all the way to Bagan Lalang.
Getting there
From the Penang Bridge, continue on the North South Expressway. Exit at Exit 164 (Permatang Pauh Interchange) and continue west on Jalan Permatang Pauh until the traffic lights on your right, in front of the Quaker Oats factory. Turn right and continue on Jalan Bagan Lalang. After passing the traffic lights intersection with Jalan Ong Yi How, look for the signboard for Ong Cheng Huat on your left. When I wrote this, the sign was partially hidden by the construction fence. If you lost your way, contact the restaurant at 04-331 4782.
