The Medicine Buddha, also called the buddha of healing and medicine, is the Bhaisajyaguru in Mahayana Buddhism. The Chinese for the Medicine Buddha is 藥師佛 while in Sanskrit, it is भैषज्यगुरु. The Medicine Buddha is usually depicted in a seated position.
The Medicine Buddha features prominently in Chinese and Japanese Buddhism. In Chinese Buddhism, he is one of a trinity of Buddhas, along with Sakyamuni (which is known also as Gautama Buddha) and Amitabha, the celestial buddha of Mahayana Buddhism. In Japanese he is known as Yakushi (薬師), and is featured in many of the older temples of Kyoto and Nara.
