Sungai Pinang Jamek Mosque
Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang is a newly completed mosque along Jelutong Road. It was officiated by the Yang di-Pertuan Negeri, Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato' Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas, on 25 July, 2008. The new Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang replaces the old Masjid Bahru Sungai Pinang. It is located a short distance from Masjid Maqbul.
Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang and Masjid Maqbul share a common history, tracing their founding by the religious guru Abdul Ghani of Madura, as known as Tuan Guru. Malay and Acehnese traders who came up Sungai Pinang on sampans and perahus used the mosque for prayers. In the 1860's, the congregation split into two camps, the Bendera Merah and Bendera Putih secret societies. Each is affiliated with Chinese secret societies. The animosity culminated with open streetfights called the Penang Riots of 1867. The breakaway group found the Masjid Bahru. From then on, Masjid Maqbul was also known as Masjid Lama.
Today, Masjid Bahru has taken on the name Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang. It is within walking distance of the smaller Masjid Maqbul, which has also been restored.
