Candlenut (Buah Keras)

Buah Keras

Buah keras, or candlenut (Aleurites moluccanus), is a type of nut the size of the 20-sen coin. Its appearance resembles that of the Macadamia - but not in taste, of course. Buah keras is used in Nyonya cooking is to act as thickeners for curries. It is also called kemiri in Indonesia.

Buah keras comes from the candlenut tree (naturally), which grows to a height of 15-25 meters, with wide spreading branches. Like the macadamia, candlenuts have a very high oil content - it derives its name from its former use as candle.
