Shenyang (沈阳) is a city in northeast China. It is the capital of Liaoning Province, in the region historically known as Manchuria. The city has an urban population of 5 million people within a metropolitan area of 7.7 million people. It is the biggest city in northeast China.

Shenyang actually means "city to the north of the Shen River". The Shen River refers to the Hun River as it was formerly known by that name. The area around Shenyang has evidence of human habitation going back to 7,200 years ago.

Shenyang was founded by General Qin Kai during the Warring States period, around 300 BC. At that time, it was known as Hou. The city became the capital of China under the Manchus in 1625. It was to remain the capital until 1644, when the capital was moved to Beijing following the fall of the Ming Dynasty. Due to its role as a capital, Shenyang is the site of the tombs of early Qing rulers, which are today a World Heritage Site.

Shenyang is today an important industrial center in China. Among the industries located here include aerospace, heavy machinery, software, automotive and electronics. It is also developing as a banking center of northeast China, with the opening of several foreign banks here.

Planning your trip to Shenyang

The main international gateway is the Shenyang Taoxian International Airport, which receives international flights from several cities including Seoul, Osaka and Tokyo. The airport is 30 kilometers to the south of downtown Shenyang. You can take the airport shuttle that goes to the China Northern Airlines ticket office at Zhonghua Road in downtown.

Exploring Shenyang

At the moment, the only form of public transport in Shenyang is its bus system, which is comprehensive, but may require some learning, as it is geared to the needs of the locals. Until the Shenyang Metro opens, the other practical option is to take the taxi. It costs ¥8.00 for the first 3 kilometers, and then ¥1.80 per kilometer thereafter.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
