Yeap Chor Ee Road, Penang

Yeap Chor Ee Road, or Jalan Yeap Chor Ee, is one of those "accidental main roads" of Penang Island. I call it such because Yeap Chor Ee Road was not meant to be a main road when it was built in the early part of the 20th century. At that time, it was just a country late which links Green Lane to the plantations at Bukit Gelugor and Bukit Gambir. Today Yeap Chor Ee Road connects Green Lane, now called Jalan Masjid Negeri, to Jalan Bukit Gambir, near the junction with Jalan Lembah.

The present shape of Yeap Chor Ee Road was established in the 1980's, when the southern part of Penang Island experienced rapid development. Yeap Chor Ee Road was turned into a major road to connect George Town with the newly established neighbourhoods such as Sungai Dua, Lip Sin Gardens and Bukit Jambul. The residential houses of Island Glades now see heavy vehicle movement and traffic crawls, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours. On the south side of Yeap Chor Ee Road are the older houses of Bukit Gelugor. These properties, regarded as rural when they were built many decades ago, are now on expensive suburban land.
Yeap Chor Ee Road was named after local millionaire Yeap Chor Ee, whose legacy lives on today as the Homestead, Wawasan University and the House of Yeap Chor Ee.
