Seri Tanjung Pinang, Penang

Seri Tanjung Pinang is a residential and commercial development in Tanjong Tokong, on the northeastern coast of Penang Island. Due to its proximity to George Town, it is being developed as an upscale neighbourhood. Among the development at Seri Tanjung Pinang include upmarket residential properties, a shopping mall called Straits Quay, a few blocks of high-rise condominiums, and serviced residential properties.

The residential properties at Seri Tanjung Pinang include gated communities as well as low-cost flats, in keeping with the mixed development requirement. Straits Quay, the shopping mall at Seri Tanjung Pinang, also includes a marina and an esplanade, the Seri Tanjung Pinang Promenade, where one can get a good view of George Town.

It is now about three years since the first batch of tenants moved in at Seri Tanjung Pinang. The shopping mall in the area, Straits Quay, is now opened for the past six months. A drive along Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang, the main boulevard in the neighbourhood, reveals an uneven road that appears poorly maintained. Traffic is light.
Areas where the road was dug up for installation of cables (or what have's), have been poorly covered back, providing for a rather bumpy ride for visitors heading towards Straits Quay. This can be forgiven if Seri Tanjung Pinang is a low-cost neighbourhood, not one which is touted as a premium-priced gated community.

On either sides of Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang are rows of white-washed bungalows, semi-detached houses and terraced units, looking like Bedouin tents in an arid desert. No doubt many of these houses are oases of comfort, but the surrounding terrain has a harsh climate.
Very well, trees take time to grow. It's not like they haven't planted any. So, I will have to give Seri Tanjung Pinang many more years - a decade perhaps - to become a leafy neighbourhood on par with Jesselton Heights. At the moment it's like living on a coastal sand dune.
