The two sand islands, also called tidal islands, off Penang Bridge were formed when Penang Bridge was built, changing the direction of the current. There was some intention on the part of the Penang government to develop these islands for tourism purposes, but up till now, no concrete effort has been put in place.

There are two islands, a bigger one nearer to Penang Island while a smaller, flatter one is closer to the Penang Bridge. Of the two, the second island is the most pretty. That's because it is flatter, and hence easier to explore. Another distinctive feature of the second island is a sand bank on its western side that juts into the sea. From the second island, we can get a close-up view of the Penang Bridge.

I took the photographs on this page when I visited the tidal islands for the second time, on the Penang Bridge Sunset Cruise outing. It was a lot of fun exploring it. Like before, the islands were littered with trash that was swept there by the tides. On the second island, we saw a lot of jelly fish on the sand - so it would be a good idea to wear your shows if you want to explore the island.
