Sacred Heart Balik Pulau, Penang
Sacred Heart Balik Pulau is a Chinese school in Balik Pulau, Penang. It was established by the nuns of the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus. Classes began in the 1930's with two teachers and a hundred pupils. Lessons were conducted in Mandarin for children of Hakka farmers.
The Hakka farmers of Balik Pulau were descendents of refugees of the failed Taiping Rebellion, a 19th century Chinese version of the Khmer Rouge whose leader practised a self-styled form of Christianity and ruled through fear and brutality. It gripped southern China from 1850 to 1864 but was eventually wiped out by the Qing Imperial Army. The Hakkas fled southern China. In the hills of Balik Pulau, they found a new life and a new beginning, as well as a new religion, Roman Catholicism, through missionaries from Belgium.
