Pronouns in Penang Hokkien


Pronouns in Penang Hokkien are very simple and regular. They are the same whether in they are the subject or the object. The meaning is derived from the position they take in the sentence and the context.
The First, Second and Third Personal Pronouns
I = wah4
You = lu4
He/She/It = ie1
Plural Form
The plural forms are created by simply adding -lang2 to the above pronouns.
We = wah1-lang2 (literally, "I people")
We can also be expressed with larn4 and larn4-lang2, both meaning we (not including they).
You = lu1-lang2 (literally "you people", which explains how "you people" creeps into Malaysian English)
They = ie1-lang2
Examples of usage
Wah4 keo3 ie1
I call him.
Ie1 keo3 wah1
He calls me.
Possessiveness
Possessive Pronouns and Possessive Adjectives are created by adding -eh2 to the First, Second and Third Personal Pronouns.
Wah-eh: My, mine
Lu-eh: Your (sgl), yours (sgl)
ie-eh: his, her, hers, its
Wah-lang-eh: Our, ours
Larn-eh, Larn-lang-eh: Our, ours
Lu-lang-eh: Your (pl), yours (pl)
ie-lang-eh: Their, theirs
ie1-eh3 chekh3 tee1 ta1-lok1? Where is his book? (Literally, his book at where?)
ie1-eh2 tee1 chit1-peng2: His is here. (Literally, his-one at here.)
