New Zealand (Maori: Aotearoa) is an island nation in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. It comprises two main islands, called simply the North Island and the South Island, and a number of small islands. It covers 268,021 sq km (103,483 sq mi) and has a population of 4.4 million people. The capital is Wellington while the biggest city is Auckland.

New Zealand ratified the World Heritage Convention on 22 November, 1984. As of August 2010, it has three World Heritage Sites, two in the natural category and one in the mixed category. New Zealand also has another eight sites on the World Heritage Tentative List.

Climate of New Zealand

New Zealand generally experiences a maritime climate, although there are vast regional variations in climate. The Central Otago region is semi arid, receiving just 300 mm of rainfall per year, while the western face of the Southern Alps receive as much as 8000 mm. Temperature in Auckland varies from an average high of 24°C in February to a low of 7°C in July.
