Mee Udang, Penang

Mee Udang is a dish of prawn noodles. This is primarily a Malay dish similar to the Jawa Mee sold by Chinese hawkers. Lately however, there are a number of Chinese hawkers who have begun to sell the Malay-style Mee Udang.
Although translated as Prawn Noodle, Mee Udang should not be mistaken for the Chinese Prawn Noodle, which in Penang is popularly known as Hokkien Mee. The Malay-style Mee Udang has a tomato-based gravy. Ingredients include egg noodle (mee), rice noodle (bihun), prawn, boiled egg, sliced green chili pepper, and some times squid, and topped with a slice of lime.
Teluk Kumbar, on the southwest corner of Penang, is the most popular place for Mee Udang. Many hawker stalls around Penang Island advertise their Mee Udang as "Teluk Kumbar Mee Udang" for obvious reasons. You can usually order the noodle dish with a soup base (rebus) or fried (goreng).
If you go to Teluk Kumbar itself, you will find a number of Mee Udang stalls. My own favourite is Mee Udang Cantik, which is located away from the seaside. I like it to the stalls beside the sea because it is cleaner and there are fewer flies (almost, I can say, no flies) at the stall. I don't quite enjoy eating my meal while having to fan away flies, so Mee Udang Cantik is my choice.
