About Masjid Jamek Al-Munauwar
Masjid Jamek Al-Munauwar is an old Malay mosque in Kelawei Road. It is located near to where the original Malay settlement of Kelawei Road was situated. The name "Kelawei" itself is a corruption of the word "Kuala Awal", referring to the first estuary to the north of Tanjung Penaga (George Town)
Until the 1930's, Kelawei was at the shore and the Malays living there were mostly fishermen. Some of their perahus can still be seen packed along the shore at Gurney Drive.
Masjid Jamek Al-Munauwar is located between the junction of Edgecumbe Road and Jones Road. It has been renovated a few times, and no longer retains the original look.
