James Richardson Logan is best remembered among the locals in Penang for fighting for their rights at a time when non-European rights are often suppressed. He was a lawyer and proprietor of a newspaper in Penang. This tomb also contains the remains of his brother Abraham Logan.
Logan is said to be the person who coined the term "Indonesia" for the Dutch East Indies. He is remembered with the Logan Memorial as well as Logan Road in Penang.
