Jalan Bagan Jermal, George Town, Penang
|
Jalan Bagan Jermal is a major road on the northern part of George Town. It runs from the junction with Gottlieb Road, Burmah Road and Mount Erskine Road to the junction with Kelawei Road, Gurney Drive and Tanjong Tokong Road.
Jalan Bagan Jermal got its name from the Malay village of the same name. The name "bagan jermal" means "fish trap poles", and refer to fish traps that were driven into the mudflats along the coastal banks. This form of fishing may have been lost to time, but there are still a few fishing boats anchored on the shore off Bagan Jermal even till today.
Jalan Bagan Jermal forms the northern boundary when George Town obtained its city status in the 1950's. Today it is part of the northern suburb with middle to upper middle class residential properties.
Getting there
Rapid Penang Bus 101, 104 and 304 pass through Jalan Bagan Jermal.
