In Penang Hokkien, time can be expressed in both the colloquial as well as the literary way.

We have already been introduced the colloquial way of expressing time in the beginner's lesson on telling time. The colloquial method splits the hour (tiam1ceng1) into 12 segments based on the clock face. Each digit on the clock face is expressed as ji3 (word).

The literary method splits the hour into 60 minutes (hoon1). Of the two, naturally the literary way is more precise, as one can express time right down to the minute, which can then be split into 60 seconds (miau4). In this chapter, we learn to tell the time in Penang Hokkien. As a visitor to Penang, learning to tell time will be helpful when asking about the arrival and departure of transport such as buses, trains and planes. Listen to the video while you go through the lesson below.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
