Have GPS will travelHave GPS will travel (30 July 2016)

In the past, giving directions can be so tedious. Tedious to write, and tedious to follow! I know, for at Penang Travel Tips, I have been giving directions to places of interest for close to ten years.

Now, thanks to global positioning system, or GPS, giving directions has become a lot easier and more precise. Since the middle of 2014, I have begun adding GPS map coordinates to Penang Travel Tips. And as you know, Penang Travel Tips nowadays cover not just Penang, and the whole Malaysia. I have added GPS map coordinates of hundreds of interest in Malaysia, helping countless people navigate to the places of their choice, without having to remember directions.

A great advantage of using GPS instead of manual directions is that, should a road be blocked, you can take an alternative road, and your GPS navigator will provide you directions using the alternative route. With the old method, if something should happen to the provided road, you are indeed lost.

At Penang Travel Tips, I use a combination of Google Maps, Google Street View and GPS to locate and pinpoint the map coordinates which I then provide to you on my website. I visit these places to get the photographs that you see on my site. To reach all these places of interest, I now use the Papago Z1+ GPS Navigator, which I bought from Lazada. See the features here:

I simply love my Papago Z1+. You can see it in my photo above. The Papago Z1+ comes with the Malaysia Map Data pre-loaded, so it is ready to use out of the box. All I need to do is to turn it on, go to setting so that my GPS Navigator can locate where I am. It takes less than 10 minutes for it to establish my location (it's longer the first time, but subsequently it find me as soon as I turn it on.)

The map that comes with the Papago Z1+ has voice navigator which you can set to English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Cantonese, Thai and even Hokkien!

With a GPS Navigator, you don't need a smartphone with data plan, because it doesn't use Internet. It is a single-purchase investment that will last you for years and years. I have an older GPS Navigator, also from Papago, but I switch to using the Z1+ because it has a 5 inch screen which makes viewing much easier.

Built into the Papago Z1+ are hundreds of sights. However, there are still thousands more which are not within the device, and that's where my Penang Travel Tips website comes into the picture. I have explored and documented hundreds of very interesting places all over Malaysia. Using my Penang Travel Tips website and a GPS Navigator device, like the Papago Z1+, you can visit all these places without memorising directions.

Whenever you come across a place of interest that I describe on my website, all you need to go is to key in the map coordinates which I provide into your GPS Navigator, and it will take you to the place. The map coordinate is shown on my website like this: GPS: 4.45736, 101.36585. The first set of number (4.45736) is the latitude (how much north or south), while the second set (101.36585) is the longitude (how much east or west). A number such as 4.45736, 101.36585 means it is 4.45736°N and 101.36585°E. Just key in these numbers to the longitude and latitude of your GPS and then press GO!

If you travel a lot in Malaysia, whether for work or recreation, I would recommend that you check out the Papago Z1+ Navigator, which you can get from Lazada below. And then you'd discover have GPS you will indeed travel!

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
