Georgetown Baptist Church is a church along Larut Road in Penang. It is the 10th Baptist church to be established in Malaysia. The Baptists trace their roots to the Chinese Christians who immigrated from Swatow, China at the beginning of the 20th century. The first Baptist church in Malaya got its start in Alor Setar in 1938, under the initiative of Mrs Oh Hock Teck. This was followed by the Penang Baptist Church in 1953.
In 1954, an English Youth Fellowship under the stewardship of Mrs Martha Strother, wife of Reverend Strothez, was established at the Penang Baptist Church, which is a Chinese-speaking assembly. However, as the English-speaking congregation expanded, it soon appeared necessary to develop an English language worship service.
Georgetown Baptist Church was thus established in 1956, to cater to the English-speaking segment of the church. It initially let at the premises of Penang Baptist Church at 35 Anson Road. The site at Larut Road was purchased thanks to a gift blessing of RM75,000 from the Lottie Moon Fund. Another RM70,000 was raised by the congregation. The earliest building, the Education Block, was completed in 1961.
The present building of the Georgetown Baptist Church dates back to 1985. The two-storey building facing Argyll Road houses an auditorium, office and pastor's quarters.
