George Town Heritage Passport
Picture this: George Town 1930. A bustling sea port. Ships from all over the world converge on its harbour. Steam ships, Chinese junks, sampans, barges, perahus, vessels of all shapes and sizes elbowed for space. In the midst of the anarchic flottila, a luxury liner inches towards the pier. On board were the wealthy, the influential, and the powerful. Soon the passengers were allowed dashing man in his mid thirties stepped ashore. His name is Jones. Dr Jones. And he has come to discover George Town, the Pearl of the Orient.

The George Town Heritage Passport, cornerstone of the Unesco World Heritage Site 1st Anniversary Celebration. I conceptualised it to be just that: a passport that Dr Jones would hold, should he ever visit George Town in the 1930's. I want this little booklet to be your passport to the heritage sites of George Town. Not only does it provide you a map showing the location of 25 heritage sites within the city, each site is also beautifully photographed and documented. The cover has embossed bronze lettering, and the World Heritage Site logo. And it does act as a passport. On each page, you can collect specially made stamps to commemorate your visit, one for the 25 different sites featured.

The George Town Heritage Passport goes on sale from the 7th of July, 2009. You can buy it from the Penang Heritage Trust (PHT), at 26 Church Street (04-264 2631). The price is RM8.00, and for each copy sold, RM1.00 goes to support heritage conservation in George Town.

To collect the heritage stamps for your passport, go to either Penang Heritage Trust or the World Heritage Office, where 13 of the stamps is available. For the remaining 12 stamps, you need to visit the 12 participating sites during the 1st Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, 25 July, between 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm. There will be volunteers stationed at each of these 12 sites to stamp your passport. To collect all 12 stamps, you need to visit all 12 sites. It is part of the fun, as the passport takes you around to discover the rich heritage of George Town, celebrated as a World Heritage Site.
