Northallerton is a market town in Hambleton district, in the shire county of North Yorkshire, England. It served as the county town of North Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, when the shire county of North Yorkshire was created. The town covers 33.41 sq km (12.9 sq mi) and has a population of some 17,000 people (2012 estimate).

Human habitation in the area surrounding Northallerton goes back to at least the Roman period. The Romans had some sort of military installation there. After the Romans pulled out, the area was administered by the Anglo-Saxons. Christianity arrived when 7th century Roman missionary established the first church there. That church is long gone, but its site is where the All Saints' Church is now standing.

During Anglo-Saxon times, Northallerton was known as Alvertune. During the compilation of the Domesday Book in 1086, the Norman scribes listed it variously as Alvertune, Aluertune and Alretone. It probably evolved to its present form in the 12th century.

Being on a major roadway has its drawbacks. During the Norman Conquest in 1066, the town was almost wiped out, so severe was the determination of William the Conqueror in quelling any possible uprising. This too was described in the Domesday Book, that the town was "put down as waste".

Today Northallerton is a modern English town with a diverse economy comprising light industries, services and farming. It has a livestock auction market and a factory producing high-grade manure. Major UK supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons have a presence here.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
