Commodore Charles Grant was the commander of a British naval force on an expedition to Burma to counter Burmese aggression against the East India Company. Grant was mortally ill and left for Penang on 21 May 1824, and died on 25 July of the same year.
There is also a Charles Grant, perhaps a different person, who was the Chairman of the East India Company. According to my research, his name was mentioned in a letter written by Stamford Raffles in Batavia (Jakarta) to him, defending his (Raffles') administration in Java.
