Batu Maung Bottle Temple

The Batu Maung Bottle Temple is one of the more unusual temples in Penang, as it is decorated with bottles of all types. The official name of the temple is the Cheng Choo Tze Temple. It is dedicated to the Taoist deity Kew Loong Sern Tze. The temple is located on the hill road that leads to Teluk Tempoyak. It was registered on 26 November, 2001.

Getting there

The Batu Maung Bottle Temple is best approached by car. From the Batu Maung village, take the road towards Permatang Damar Laut. Turn in at the junction to Teluk Tempoyak. As the road goes uphill, look for the temple signboard on the right side of the road. Park your vehicle and climb down to visit the temple.

If you are visiting the bottle temple by bus, Rapid Penang Bus T305 goes to Teluk Tempoyak and passed by the temple.

What to see and do

The star attraction of Cheng Choo Tze Temple are the hundreds of empty bottles that are used to decorate its walls. These include mostly Chinese wine bottles and beer bottles. It could be that these bottles were placed here because the deity of Cheng Choo Tze Temple is fond of drinking.
