Sukhothai (GPS: 17.00555, 99.82637; Thai: สุโขทัย ) is a small town in central Thailand. It is the site of an early Thai kingdom. The town is located near the banks of the Yom River, which is one of the four principal tributaries of the Chao Phraya River. The modern town of Sukhothai is today the provincial capital of Sukhothai Province. It is on both sides of the Yom River. The ancient ruins of Sukhothai, nowadays preserved as the Sukhothai Historical Park, a World Heritage Site recognised by UNESCO, is located some 12 km to the west of town.

Most visitors come to Sukhothai to admire its ancient ruins. You can find accommodation within the vicinity of the historical park as well as at Sukhothai town itself.

Sukhothai Historical Park

The main purpose for most visitors to Sukhothai is to visit the Sukhothai Historical Park, which is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1991.
