Leasing a Car in Singapore

If you are visiting Singapore for just a short period, as a tourist, I won't recommend that you lease a car. It's just not worth the effort. You can easily move about taking the taxi, MRT trains and buses. However if you are going to be staying for an extended period, leasing and buying are options worth considering.

Should you buy or should you lease a car?

If you are leasing a car for a long term, it is going to be more expensive than buying one outright. On the other hand, cars have poor resale value in Singapore, so if you buy a new car, don't expect it to be worth much two years "down the road". Also, buying a car is quite a complicated affair (which I shall explain under "Buying a Car in Singapore")

If you are staying in Singapore as an expatriate, find out if your company is providing you a company car in your contract. This will be a leased car that you will (of course) have to return when it's time to leave. Much of the hassle has been taken care of on your behalf, while you just need to ensure that you can legally drive in Singapore (read Getting a Driving License in Singapore).

The following are some of the car leasing agencies in Singapore (you are probably familiar with some of the companies mentioned here). You have a choice from small budget sedans all the way to SUVs and luxury cars such as the Mercedes Benz and BMW. Expect to spend between S$80 to $150 per day or S$1500 per month for an average sedan, to around S$5000 per month for a luxury brand. When contacting the car rental agency accept an International Driver's Permit.
