Qatar introduces Qatar (Arabic: قطر), a Middle Eastern country occupying the Qatar Peninsula off the Arabian Peninsula. The country is surrounded by the Persian Gulf, with a border shared with Saudi Arabia to the south. Qatar covers 11,437 sq km (4,416 sq mi) and has a population of 1.7 million people (2011 estimate). The capital and largest city is Doha.

Qatar is three hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+3). The official currency here is the Riyal (QAR). The phone IDD code is +974. Traffic is driven on the right in this country. The electricity of Qatar is 240V/50Hz using UK plugs.

Qatar today has the world's highest GDP per capita. Its economy is based on the export of oil and natural gas. The country has the largest per capita production and proven reserves of both commodities, resulting in the second highest human development index in the Arab world after the United Arab Emirates.

People have been living in the Qatari area since the time of antiquity. The inhabitants were pagans until the spread of Islam to the area in the 7th century. Due to the harsh climate, population has been sparse, limited to only a few nomadic tribes.

The Portuguese colonized Qatar and ruled it from 1517 until 1538, when they lost it to the Ottomans. Qatar was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1913. Qatar was a British protectorate from 1916 until independence on 3 September, 1971.

Planning your trip to Qatar

The Doha International Airport (DOH) is the only commercial airport in Qatar. It is the base of Qatar Airways. Foreign workers in the oil and gas industries form a big portion of its traffic. The airport will soon be replaced by the New Doha International Airport presently under construction.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
