Leyte is an island in the Eastern Visayas Region. It is located between Samar to the north and Mindanao to the south. Separating it from Cebu Island to the west is Camotes Sea.

Leyte covers 5,901.5 sq km (2,278 sq mi) and has a population of 1.6 million people (2011 estimate). The whole island is administered under the Leyte Province. The provincial capital and biggest city is Tacloban City.

The people of Leyte come from two linquistic groups. Those living in western and southern Leyte speak Cebuanos while those in the north and east speak Waray-Waray. The majority of the population are now Roman Catholics. At 97%, it has the highest percentage of Roman Catholics in the Visayas.

The island of Leyte is still primarily a developing island dependent on agriculture. Among the crops grown here include rice and coconut. Fishing is also a major preoccupation of the people of Leyte.

Leyte's role in the Second World War is best remembered in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, which stood as the largest naval battle in modern history. The eventual victory of the Americans is remembered with the Leyte Landing Memorial.
