Lumbini (लुम्बिनी), Nepal

Lumbini (लुम्बिनी) is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal. Its position in history stems from it being the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who as Gautama Buddha founded Buddhism.

Lumbini is one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, the other three being Kushinagar, Bodh Gaya and Sarnath. Each has a significance related to the life of Buddha on earth.

Ashoka (304-232 BC), the Indian emperor of the Maurya Dynasty, was a strong believer in Buddhism and was pivotal in making the religion better known. In his visit to Lumbini, he erected one of his memorials, called the Ashoka Pillar.

Lumbini was inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in 1997.

You can fly to Lumbini, arriving at the Sidhhartha Nagar Airport in Bhairahawa, about 22 km away. There are regular flights from Kathmandu. There are also buses from Kathmandu, Pokhara and Varanasi.
