Jomsom (जोमसोम) is a small mountain town in the Himalayas, in Nepal. It is also known as Dzongsam or New Fort. It is located in Mustang District, and is about a day's trek from the town of Muktinath.

Jomsom straddles the Kali Gandaki River within the Annapurna Conservation Area. It is a destination for trekkers doing the Annapurna circuit (around the Annapurna mountain range.) Located 2,743 m (9,000 ft) above sea level, Jomsom is dry and cold, particularly at night. The sky here is cloudless, especially during the trekking months of October and November, making daytime temperature rise.

Jomsom is surrounding by the spectacular snow-capped mountains that include Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Jomsom Airport is an airstrip that receives flights from Pokhara. The town itself clings to the barren terrain, which bears signs of harsh weather.

The culture in Jomsom is quite different from that of lowland Nepal. Due to its proximity to Tibet, you can find a high Tibetan influence here. There are Buddhist monastery here with prayer wheels, and as you trek along the Kali Gandaki River, you will come across chortens.

From Jomsom, you can trek upriver to Muktinath, or downriver to Beni, and continue from there by bus to Pokhara.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
