Klang's Little India (6 July, 2016)


Klang's Little India is a neighbourhood in downtown Klang, Selangor. The neighbourhood centres around parts of Jalan Tengku Kelana, Jalan Dato Hamzah and Jalan Tengku Diaudin. This area has a high concentration of Indian businesses, with shops selling things like sarees, Punjabi suits, pots, prayer items and jewellery.

About Klang's Little India

Klang's Little India evolved from the settlement of Indians who made the area their centre of activity over the generations. Its location to the south of the Klang River puts it within easy walking distance for new arrivals to Klang.

Today Klang's Little India continues to be a hive of business activity, particularly for the Indian and Indian Muslim community. There are a number of supermarkets in this area, such as a Mydin outlet. Places of worship for the Indian community is also within close walking distance, with the biggest being the Klang Indian Muslim Mosque, also called Masjid India Muslim Tengku Kelana.

For many years, Klang Municipal Council had attempted to rebrand and rename Little India, each time the effort met with fervent opposition from the locals. In March, 2009, the Council tried to rename Little India to Medan Kelana, but backed down following the intervention of State Exco Member Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar. The following month, it tried to rename Padang Chetty to Laman Sari, but was ordered by the State Government to drop the idea. Nevertheless, the action of the Council has earned it much unpopularity among the locals. In April 2016, the Council once again caused an uproar when it attempted once more to rename Little India¹, this time to Kelana Square.
