Gedung Raja Abdullah (Tin Museum), Selangor

Gedung Raja Abdullah, KlangGedung Raja Abdullah, Klang (13 July, 2016)

Gedung Raja Abdullah (GPS: 3.0432, 101.44759) which today houses the Tin Museum, is a historical building, and one of the oldest, in Klang. It was built in 1857, at a time when Kuala Lumpur was still a muddy hinterland visited only by tin prospectors. The building was a warehouse belonging to Raja Abdullah bin Raja Jaafar, the chieftain of Bugis descent who was instrumental in the development of the tin-mining industry in Selangor.

Gedung Raja Abdullah was used as a storehouse for the equipment needed in the early extraction of tin ore. However it was only used for a short period. When the Klang War erupted in 1867-1874 (for cross reference, read also Kota Raja Mahdi), Raja Abdullah was driven out of Klang by his antagonist, Raja Mahdi, and the building was left disused. It was only after the British under Sir Andrew Clarke had established some form of law and order in Klang that the building was taken over and was used as the colonial government offices.

Today Gedung Raja Abdullah is being refurbished as the Tin Museum to chronicle the history of tin mining in the Klang Valley with which the building played such a significant role.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
